This MSI GS63VR came in a nice clean looking black box with red lettering, unlike the MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-240’s box that was very colorful (see below).
Taking the top off the box you find the laptop encased in a very nice clothe sleeve.
The MSI GS63VR Stealth Pro-252. It has an i7-7700HQ quad-core processor, 16GB of DDR4-2400 RAM, 15.6″ full HD IPS level panel, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (pascal) with 6GB of vRAM. The primary boot disk is a 256GB Solid State Drive paired with a 1TB 5400RPM hard drive. There is no fingerprint reader and the webcam does not support Windows Hello. You’ll have to stick with the good old fashioned password or PIN to log onto Windows. The GS line is their slim series and it really is thin at 0.69″ and weighing in at under 4 lbs.
For those curious, it comes with a nice 180w power supply (19.5 V 9.23 A).
On the front you have a series of lights to indicate storage activity, WiFi, Bluetooth, Caps/Num lock.
On the right side you have a power button. You have to hold it for a moment to turn the computer on.
Continuing back along the right you come to USB 2.0, Thunderbolt 3 USB type-c port, HDMI (v1.4), Mini DisplayPort (v1.2), and power.
There is nothing on the rear, so moving to the left side we find the Kensington lock, Killer Gigabit Ethernet port (and Killer WiFi internally), memory card reader, and 3x USB 3.0 ports. Finally we have a shared headphone/S/PDIF and Mic 3.5mm jacks. Sorry no USB 3.1 type-A anywhere on this machine. There is plenty of ventilation as there are vents on both left and right, as well as the rear and bottom to help prevent overheating.
Also on the bottom you will find a wonderful felt cover to keep the laptop from sliding around when playing games.
The keyboard feels very nice and features the SteelSeries backlight system. It allows you to customize the colors displayed under the keys for various activities, such as listening to music, playing games, and more.
The GS63VR comes with Dragon Center. This app allows you to monitor the temperature of the CPU and GPU, control the fans, customize the keyboard colors, and even connect your cellphone (using the supported MSI app) to do those same tasks.
Taking a look at HWInfo we find the display is made by Chi Mei. It runs at 1080p and looks great. MSI calls it an IPS level panel.
HWInfo showing the graphics card information. The Stealth Pro-252 has an on-board Intel HD Graphics 630 and discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (by MSI) with 6GB of vRAM (by Samsung) with NVIDIA optimus support.
